This month marks two years of blogging – who knew it would come to this? Almost 300 posts with subjects ranging all over the place. This being Lent I have given up TV which leaves more time for musing and wondering where I am going, what I’ve done, and why.
Just put up a little TED video on how to live to 100+. Much of my blog has to do with the pluses and problems of aging. Unfortunately there aren’t many people my age who follow my blog but it might be of some help to those who have to deal with, cope with, care for older folks. If you’re browsing this blog to see what old age is really like, don’t stop here. Click on Days With My Father. This is how 98 looks and acts. If it doesn’t bring a tear to your eye, you must have a heartstring missing.
In the past two years my own walking has become progressively worse – much slower, not nearly as sure-footed, with an occasional stagger. My “senior lapses” and word-finding difficulties have become more frequent. At Christmas-time, for example, I tried to remember the name of my poinsettia and could only come up with forsythia and pachysandra (they had the right number of syllables and both ended with “a”) but the word poinsettia was nowhere to be found. Yesterday, saying the rosary with a group, I couldn’t remember what day it was and what mystery we were saying. But, as you see, right now I’m pretty sharp! My blogging skills are increasing somewhat. When I forget how to embed or upload an image, it will probably be time to stop.
Early on, I thought I’d be writing about the things I wrote about all my life – mostly religion (catholicity, charismatic renewal) and science ( covering a broad range of subjects from evolution to motherhood and breastfeeding to homosexuality) and these things have indeed been frequent topics. Who could have told me I’d be taking on the Mormons? In my humble opinion, the video on my recent post on DNA and Mormonism is as devastating at it can get.
And who would have guessed I’d become so political and have so much to say about persons known as Obama and Palin, who I place at opposite ends of the poles of trustworthiness. These have been two of the most critical years in our country’s history. We went from a pro-life president to the most pro-abortion president in our history. We went from a country with the motto “In God I Trust” to a county antagonistic to any sign of religion in the public square. We went from a culture of life to a culture of death. Against the manifest will of the people, the Democrats wheeled and dealed themselves, Chicago-style, into the most astounding power grab ever!
Recent release of visitor logs at the White House revealed that Nancy Keenan, head of NARAL (National Abortion Rights Action League) , visited the White House ten times in Obama’s 13 months and Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards has had frequent access as well. Pro-life groups were left out in the cold. How’s that for an inside glimpse into the heart of the presidency? Now the most powerful woman in Washington is not Nancy Pelosi but Kathleen Sebelius, Health and Human Services Secretary, who could not possibly be more pro-abortion.
Obamacare has put the health of all Americans into government hands – and we all know how efficient the government has been to date. The issue is not really health care – it is freedom.
Here I am, getting all wound up again. My blog seems to have covered not only the daily happenings in an old lady’s life, but a national upheaval in our beloved country which I find most disturbing. Lou Pritchett, former Vice-President, Sales and Customer Development for Procter and Gamble, has written a more trenchant commentary on what has happened than I ever could. Pritchett “is one of corporate America’s true living legends – an acclaimed author, dynamic teacher…foremost leader in change management. Lou changed the way America does business by creating an audacious concept that came to be known as “partnering.” He wrote the following open letter to President Obama. He sent it to the New York Times but they did not acknowledge it. (Hardly a surprise.)
Dear President Obama:
You are the thirteenth President under whom I have lived and unlike any of the others, you truly scare me. You scare me because after months of exposure, I know nothing about you.
You scare me because I do not know how you paid for your expensive Ivy League education and your upscale lifestyle and housing with no visible signs of support.
You scare me because you did not spend the formative years of youth growing up in America and culturally you are not an American.
You scare me because you have never run a company or met a payroll.
You scare me because you have never had military experience, thus don’t understand it at its core
You scare me because you lack humility and ‘class’, always blaming others.
You scare me because for over half your life you have aligned yourself with radical extremists who hate America and you refuse to publicly denounce these radicals who wish to see America fail.
You scare me because you are a cheerleader for the ‘blame America’ crowd and deliver this message abroad
You scare me because you want to change America to a European style country where the government sector dominates instead of the private sector.
You scare me because you want to replace our health care system with a government controlled one.
You scare me because you prefer ‘wind mills’ to responsibly capitalizing on our own vast oil, coal and shale reserves.
You scare me because you want to kill the American capitalist goose that lays the golden egg which provides the highest standard of living in the world.
You scare me because you have begun to use ‘extortion’ tactics against certain banks and corporations.
You scare me because your own political party shrinks from challenging you on your wild and irresponsible spending proposals.
You scare me because you will not openly listen to or even consider opposing points of view from intelligent people.
You scare me because you falsely believe that you are both omnipotent and omniscient.
You scare me because the media gives you a free pass on everything you do.
You scare me because you demonize and want to silence the Limbaugh’s, Hannitys, O’Reillys and Becks who offer opposing, conservative points of view.
You scare me because you prefer controlling over governing.
Finally, you scare me because if you serve a second term I will probably not feel safe in writing a similar letter in 8 years.
Lou Pritchett
A recent CNN special revealed that Americans generally view their government as corrupt. On this rather dismal note, I begin a third year of blogging. Did I tell you I saw an opossum in my yard last week? And yesterday, two robins (or perhaps the same robin twice.) The crocuses and daffodils are blooming, the peach tree and the lilac bush are budding, and my daughter has moved in next door. There’s a new greatgrandbaby up in New Hampshire. His name is Caleb Nicholas. It would seem life will go on, willy-nilly.
As Thomas Paine wrote, “These are times that try men’s souls.” We obviously need serious prayer and much moral courage.
I just want to say, “Welcome into my life, such as it is. I would be pleased if we were friends.”

Let God arise, let his enemies be scattered: let them also that hate him flee before him. – Psalm 68:1
i find it astounding that even an intelligent woman like yourself is so easily manipulated by the conservative propaganda. Make no mistake, that is what it is. Hannity, Beck, Pritchett couldnt speak a single honest and accurate sentence if you paid them.
Thanks for the input, Willie. I like to know what is going on in people’s heads. Now that you’ve done your name-calling (easily manipulated, dishonest, inaccurate) is there a statement of fact you’d like to deal with?
“Name-calling” certainly was not my intent in posting here. Rather, I was simply expressing my disappointment that somebody who I know to be of high intelligence, doesn’t seem to stop and question a piece like this before reprinting it. Rather than ask if there is a statement of fact that i would like to deal with, perhaps the better question is “Is there a statement of fact within this piece” aside from the fact that these are Mr. Pritchetts opinions.
Yes, I understand there is some factual information included in this letter (Obama never served in the military or run a company), but it is used to draw erroneous or irrelevant conclusions. The president is chosen as the leader of our country not because he knows and has experienced EVERYTHING. He is chosen to lead our country, and to help facilitate and guide our country to peace and prosperity. His staff are there to fill in the gaps as with any president before him. You may not agree with some decisions but it does not necessarily mean they are wrong.
I do not intend to go over the letter line by line but i will address a few points that really pop out for me.
1. “You scare me because after months of exposure, I know nothing about you.”- What exactly do you believe is being withheld? Obama is as open and publicly accessible as any president before him.
2. “you did not spend the formative years of youth growing up in America and culturally you are not an American”- Okay, i get it, his formative years being from age 2-10, but unless i am mistaken he has spent 3 times that much time living in the U.S. Does Hawaii not count? He is an american. He lives and works in America (and has for many years) and his loyalties lie with making America a better place. Its grasping at straws to say otherwise.
3. “you have never had military experience, thus don’t understand it at its core”- So, if there is something you have never done it means that you cannot possibly fathom what it is all about? Shouldn’t that mean that everybody complaining about Obama should shut up because they’ve never been president? If you want to argue that not serving is a gap in his resume that’s fine, but that is where the generals who advise him on military issues step in. No president has EVER had every experience with every issue that has come before them. It’s just not reasonable to expect that.
4. “you prefer ‘wind mills’ to responsibly capitalizing on our own vast oil, coal and shale reserves.”- As many other do as well. We are massive consumers of energy in this country. Oil, coal, and shale are neither sustainable or ideal in terms of health/ safety issues. We may have available resources now but in time we will not and if we aren’t thinking about it now then one day we may be caught with our pants down. The domestic consumption is also heavily reliant on foreign energy which puts us at others mercy. Lastly, even if you don’t believe in global warming, certainly you can at least acknowledge that there are some inherent risks with the way our energy is produced. Since we are the center of the capitalist world shouldn’t we at least be trying to make advances and improve on the current system?
5. “you want to kill the American capitalist goose that lays the golden egg which provides the highest standard of living in the world”- But according to my previous point he is trying to use the capitalist goose to lay the biggest free range golden egg ever. There is no doubt that some policies lean more toward socialism than others, and we all know socialism doesn’t work because of the inherent nature of humanity. By that token, capitalism is an imperfect system as well. Guess what? Also due to human nature! The reality is that if ever there were an ideal and perfect society it would likely fall somewhere in between. There will always be things that muck it up but addressing the issues is how you go about making it better, not sitting back and hoping it fixes itself.
6. “you will not openly listen to or even consider opposing points of view from intelligent people.” – That is one of his basic tenets. He wants to hear opposing points of view and have a dialogue about them. What isn’t helpful is when people with opposing points of view refuse to listen back. (as i am afraid may be the case here. please prove me wrong)
7. “the media gives you a free pass on everything you do”- kidding right? yeah sure there are some who worship him. But then there is a completely opposite group who cant let the guy eat spaghetti without questioning his choice of sauce and calling him a terrorist. Currently our media is doing a lot of pandering to one side or the other. Journalism is hardly nuetral these days, which is why to be truly informed (or as informed as one can be) you have got to get all sides of the story and try to reconcile it for yourself.
7. “you demonize and want to silence the Limbaugh’s, Hannitys, O’Reillys and Becks who offer opposing, conservative points of view”- Has he ever even bothered to discuss these guys? Remember how i said the media was messed up? Here is exhibit A. If they pooled their abilities these guys could spin the world in the opposite direction. So much of what they say is a twisted, taken-out-of-context, attempt to rile people up. The only place I’ve really seen saying anything about these guys is other media. They do what they do to get ratings so they get to keep their jobs for another day just like Jon Stewart consistently points out their inaccuracies to keep himself employed. Its capitalism at its finest! Spin media was created because there is money in it. Let these guys actually sit down in private with the president and see if they could have anything more than a one sided discussion.
So, I am done for now. I want to stress that i am not an Obama booster. I look at what he does and says with a critical eye as well. My feeling is that too many people see things with a black/ white perspective whereas the good majority of life is some shade of grey (hence the name shadesofgrey). My personal opinion is that Obama is a guy who wants to do what is best for the betterment of our country and has little to no personal agenda, which is more than i can say about the last guy. Is he going to be perfect? Of course not. But if people would cut through the BS and actually get to talking about the issues that really matter, maybe the next generation will be better for it. I think it is important that people continue to monitor what the president is doing (current and future pres.’s) to maintain the intended checks and balances implied in the constitution but material with such an obvious slant as this is counter productive to the discussion.

Good job, Willie. I did not think you would bother.
I won’t go over your points one by one – if you want to know how I came to my opinions about Obama just put Obama in the little search box on my blog (upper right) and follow along. I agreed with Pritchett before I ever heard of him. On your first point, I did want to point you to my post BARRY’S BIZARRE BACKGROUND, but when I looked at it I found the critical video was gone – “removed by user” – not so. Googling I found it unable to be viewed on YouTube either, but here’s a link
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3AfRuY9qcHg – it’s an eye-opener. Please watch. (I wonder if they can make it vanish entirely from the internet.)
I am really happy that you make so much sense this time around. Your previous statement: “Hannity, Beck, Pritchett couldnt speak a single honest and accurate sentence if you paid them” was way over the top.
I have LOTS of time to become informed and regret that I feel I cannot trust Obama and I don’t like his “advisors” either. I do not like to see so much power in a party headed by people I can’t believe in. I, along with Pritchett, am scared. I’m glad I won’t be around for the denouement.
God bless.
Again, thanks.
At first i did not intend to elaborate with the expectation that it wouldn’t get me anywhere. It appears that my instinct was right so I do not care to take this much further. However, I will say that i watched the video that you referred and it is basically more of what got to me in the original letter posted. The video is heavily biased and most of the claims in it are specious at best, which is what i take issue with here. If you only seek out information that supports your opinion, how can you honestly call yourself informed? If you would do me the courtesy, go check out this link: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-594683847743189197# it is a rather long movie but try to watch it all the way through. I don’t expect you to agree with it and, in fact, I find it leans too far in the opposite direction. It may help you to see how I can say “Hannity, Beck, Pritchett couldnt speak a single honest and accurate sentence if you paid them” because it is the same type of biased media (just in the opposite direction). This movie makes a strong case for what it wants to say but it doesn’t mean it is absolutely correct. Beyond that, I am finished. Take care.
(This comment somehow was lost for a while in cyberspace, so there is a subsequent one dated the next day.)
Willie, I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your linking me to the Zeitgeist movie. I’ve watched it once as well as the 2007 addendum at http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-594683847743189197#docid=7065205277695921912
It was an interesting Good Friday. I watched Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ in the morning and in the afternoon your contribution telling me Jesus is mythological — not even a real person. And of course subsequent shocking revelations, purporting to be truth. It’s a lot to take in at once and I’m not going to try to deal with the whole thing – much to think about and research. When I decide what I think it will probably be in a blog post. Don’t hold your breath. It sounds like a lot of work.
(I guess the Shroud of Turin couldn’t be real! See my post on the subject.)
Willie, I thank you so much for the link to the Zeitgeist movie. I not only watched it but also the 2007 addendum. After a slow beginning, it certainly held my attention. Of course, it purports to tell the truth (which will set me free!) but I’ll have to watch it at least one more time before deciding what I think about the many conspiracy theories and how much of it is actually truth. And that sounds like work. So it will take time. And when I have my thoughts together, they’ll probably be in a blogpost. Keep tuned. Be sunblest!
